Maxwell’s fire aftermath 1

While driving around this afternoon, looking for someplace to eat lunch, Mrs. Melobi and I happened upon this joint in Minneapolis. A fire had gutted the place, and the water used to extinguish it had frozen to the building, creating this strange scene.

1BCT fallen soldier memorial - 4 FEB 08

A photo of the 1st BCT’s new memorial, commemorating the brigade’s soldiers killed in action during OIF. It was unceremoniously installed yesterday, just as the snow began to fall. I expect it will be formally dedicated in the spring, when the weather isn’t so crappy.

I find it a little curious, though, that there is no other inscription – nothing to even indicate what conflict or theater in which these men and women died. What will people think of this monument, a hundred years from now?

Commute, 22JAN08

Shot of downtown Minneapolis during the strangely hellish commute on Tuesday, 22 January.

MN History Center

Shot from the Minnesota History Center, towards the state capitol.

Despite our lack of vertical terrain, Minnesota is apparently a hotbed of ski jumping. Mrs. Melobi and I met my dad at the St. Paul Ski Club and took in some ski jump action. Hurl yourself off a 50-meter tall ramp down a steep hill, flying on nothing but a couple of laminated boards? You betcha! Pictures here…

Merry Christmas from Castle Delobi to you!

From today’s Christmas party (more here):

Per Prometheus’s request, I came up with a gallery of what I might call my top 50 images. It’s not an easy task – a few of them really stand out, but my opinion of my own photos tends to change over time and it also varies with my mood. I guess you could call this the “Top 50 of Right Now,” then. Anyway, they’re just some good shots, so…enjoy.

Figuring I should use up some of that free college money the government wants to give me for being a soldier, I started taking classes at the local technical college. The course of study? Photography, naturally…

See the images from my latest assignment here.

OK, not really – but you know, everything is in “high definition” now (chicken-flavored ramen! now in HD!) so I figured I’d follow the trend.

My original deployment galleries were necessarily low quality, given my generally low bandwidth – uploading stuff on our satellite connection was even more painful than downloading. But now with my (HD!) cable, I can have better-looking images.

Without further ado…Midwest in the Mideast: The Photos.
